Thanks, Raymond, for your comments. You make a good point - in no way did I mean that agents should follow the status quo and hope everything gets better. Change is essential. The only thing I caution against is getting pulled down in the morass of negativity to the point where change is impossible. With positivity and confidence come the ability to change because it's worth changing.

Well I hate to disagree with you but you are in fact an ostrich. As is the overwhelming majority of insurance professionals (both Benefits and P&C) in business today. But on the other hand, I must applaud you for pointing out all of the problems facing the industry in the future. Carriers are trying to point a rosy future. They are intentionally misleading their constituency.

What I do take exception with is your advice to agents "If you're employed today selling policies, the best you can do is keep moving forward. Your positivity ( ? ) and confidence will be rewarded tenfold once things do look up." The fact is, it's only going to get worse. There are estimates (floating around but they keep getting buried - I wonder why) that the industry (as a whole) is going to lose 15 to 30% of it's overall revenue (revenue = commission income) in the next 5 years. This is the problem.

If agents don't change they will be gone.

Buried within Health Care Reform, are 10 new audit and reporting requirements (through Payroll Processing) that are directly related to Health Insurance and Employee Benefits overall. The Human Resources Outsourcing market in the next 5 years is expected to grow by over $2 billion in new spending. We are encouraging benefits professionals to adopt HR within their agencies just as the major brokers did years ago. This will provide them with an opportunity to develop new revenue streams, to increase their client retention and most importantly, increase their "bottom line" profits.

Good tips. Educating yourself is very important – “trying very, very hard” without taking the time to educate yourself properly first can be a waste of time.

While we're talking about topics related to 2 Marketing Lessons From Toyota ASJ Online Editor's Blog, Remember to faithfully disclose all the facts in your application form. If your insurance agent fills out your application for you, be sure to read and understand the requirements carefully before signing the form. Otherwise, any non-disclosure of material fact can cause your policy to be void.

I'm glad that common sense prevailed. Had the SEC regulated indexed annuities, to some extent, these products would be less available to consumers who want/need them the most.
